Introduction

The IETM Secretariat, Arts Centre Vooruit and Flanders Festival proudly present the IETM Autumn Plenary Meeting, , an intimate encounter between the artist and the manager, linked together by the bonding power of customised telecommunication.

  • Go on a journey of discovery to the crossroads of artistic and corporate strategies.
  • Dive into the multiple challenges of the creative industries.
  • Be seduced by the personalised communication power of new media.
  • Have a blind date or explore the city of Ghent on a guided cultural tour.

Ghent – increasingly regarded as the centre of vibrant and hip urban culture – has been chosen as the HQ for this year’s autumn IETM meeting. Impressive from both an historical and an idyllic standpoint, this city is the perfect backdrop for an encounter between past and future, art and tourism, dating and networking.

Thanks to the central and prominent position of Arts Centre Vooruit in the city of Ghent, in Belgium and in Europe, we anticipate that a top-choice of European artists, programmers and art managers will guarantee 3 days of exciting encounters.

Come to Ghent for a confrontation with the intimate potential of cutting edge technologies, and navigate through informative consultations, shared body sessions, interactive practices and panel debates.

Come and get connected for the celebration of anniversaries of IETM, Arts Centre Vooruit and Flanders Festival!

General Theme

focuses on alternative strategies for communication, for both artistic creation and for venues and arts centres. With a wink to the corporate market, IETM strives for a with every single member of the meeting. In a double bind of commercial strategies and artistic subversion of marketing communication principles, tries to unveil both the embeddedness of the cultural sector in an economic reality which determines scope of activity and artistic endeavour, and the possible strategies to react against these determining factors, by using them for purposes other than those originally intended.

Contemporary economy places great importance on the possibilities of telecommunication and internet, tools that make a far-reaching personalisation and customisation of the work arena both possible and inevitable. The worker no longer has a ‘free-zone’ that is clearly divided from his working time. Both in space (e.g. through the use of laptop, palm and mobile phone), and time (through the possibility of working at home, on the train, on vacation, and during the night) the work ethic has pervaded the personal life of its employees, mixing up ‘personal’ and ‘business’ activities, with the overall intention to transform the individual into a rung on the ladder towards profit for the company.

This process occurs in the same way that internet communication tools get better and better at guessing and predicting your personal tastes and desires, and ultimately creating appetites you hadn’t been previously aware of.

is an invitation to play the game: by using dating formats, turning the artistic encounter into a touristic sightseeing excursion, and using the internet as a tool for personalising your participation in the working sessions, this IETM Meeting will provide you with a surprisingly intimate networking and learning zone, situated in our One on One dating spot, Arts Centre Vooruit, right in time for the celebration of IETM’s 25th birthday!

On the other hand we will also look into artistic practices and strategies that use and subvert corporate communication strategies, and we will research the use and implementation of technological tools and telecommunication possibilities for artistic communication.

At IETM Birmingham 2003, an IETM working group looked at the intersection between art and technology. At IETM Milano 2004, we invoked the famous Richard Florida prescription of “Talent, Tolerance and Technology” and asked where the creative IETM workshops positioned themselves. In IETM and On The Move.org Nantes Satellite in 2005, we brought together ICT experts with cultural information providers and got a hot and spicy mix of perspectives. Now, in IETM Ghent 2007, we will look at the IP revolution: personalised everything… brought to you by your cookies, spyware, and the data about yourself that you didn’t even know you had.
